Eye Emergencies: What You Need to Know

Certain eye conditions require immediate attention to prevent vision loss or further complications. At Animal Eye Services, we prioritise these emergencies to ensure pets receive the care they need as quickly as possible.

What Constitutes an Emergency?

We recommend urgent evaluation for patients presenting with:

  • Sudden onset of blindness or noticeable vision loss.

  • Severe eye pain indicated by squinting, pawing, or discomfort.

  • Visible trauma to the eye or surrounding area.

  • Foreign objects in or around the eye.

  • Sudden redness, swelling, or cloudiness of the eye.

  • Rapid changes such as bulging or shrinking of the eye.

If you’re unsure whether a condition is an emergency, please don’t hesitate to call us for advice.

How We Manage Emergencies

  • Emergency cases are given priority scheduling to ensure timely evaluation and treatment. While we aim to accommodate all emergencies as quickly as possible, we ask for understanding if triaging is necessary to address the most urgent needs first.

  • Referring veterinarians can call us directly to discuss the case and facilitate a smooth handover. Our team works collaboratively to ensure your client feels supported and informed.

  • If immediate care isn’t possible, we’ll provide advice on interim management to stabilise the condition until the pet can be seen.

We understand that emergencies can be stressful. Our team is here to provide expert guidance, clear communication, and compassionate care throughout the process.

If you suspect an emergency, please contact us on 07 3341 1981. For referring veterinarians, direct consultation with our team is always available to discuss urgent cases.
